Volunteer Opportunities

Scotts Valley Unified School District is fortunate to have hundreds of parents and community volunteers contributing to student success in a variety of capacities:

At the District Level:

Members of the Board of Trustees are elected during the fall of even-numbered years. The Board is responsible for developing policies to guide the district, hiring the district superintendent, setting the direction for the district, and passing a balanced budget. The Board meets the second and fourth Tuesdays of most months.

A Strategic Planning Committee and various Task Forces help develop the short- and long-range plans that will guide the district into the future. These groups meet throughout the spring of each year to develop the plan, review annual progress, and update the plan for the following year. Interested parties can contact the Superintendent’s Office for more information.

A Community Advisory Committee brings together parents, educators, lawmakers, service providers and others in our community with the goal of improving and protecting the education of our children with special needs. For more information, contact Educational Services.

The Health Advisory Committee meets quarterly to discuss and provide a variety of perspectives on issues concerning the health and wellness of our students. Contact the School Nurse, Ashley Wood  if you would like to participate.

The Scotts Valley Educational Foundation provides several fundraising and community-building activities throughout the school year, and depends upon volunteers for the Ice Cream Social, Annual Mt. Charlie Challenge Ride, and various other events. Community members can support the Foundation by volunteering their time or by participating in the fund raisers throughout the year.

The Legislative Action Committee is comprised of volunteers including staff members, parents and community members.  The mission of the Scotts Valley Unified School District Legislative Action Committee is to build collaborative relationships with the greater education community and to advise legislators on critical issues affecting students.   For more information on the LAC go to their website at www.sjsu.edu/faculty/wooda/LAC/index.html

At the School Sites:

Opportunities abound for school and classroom volunteers. Elementary and middle schools have School Site Councils that help in the development of the schools’ Single School Plan for Student Achievement and allocate funds for the purpose of improving school programs. All schools have a PTA or parent group that raises funds, welcomes new families, provides parent and student educational programs, organizes school events, and supports the school in many other ways. Community members can volunteer by calling the appropriate school office for more information. Athletics at the middle and high schools exist because of the many volunteer hours of parents and community members, as well as the efforts of school staff. Call the school office to learn more or to volunteer your time.

In the Classrooms:

Most important is the work you do to support your own student---by reading to younger students, inquiring about your child’s work, being sure your student comes to school well fed and rested, and providing a quiet place and time for your student to study and do homework. If you have additional time, teachers can almost always use willing volunteers in the classrooms, on field trips, and doing projects and work at home. Talk with your child’s teacher about how you can help.
