What is independent study? Independent study is an alternative means for students to complete the prescribed course of study (Ed Code 51225). Independent study is initiated by a written agreement between the certificated representative, the student, the parent/legal guardian of the student, and any other person who has direct responsibility to provide instruction. The agreement includes all the components of the individual study plan for the student (Title 5, Section 11702).
Independent study provides the opportunity for a student to:
- study at his or her own pace,
- create a bridge between the school and community,
- accept the challenge to excel in areas of special interest, and
- achieve competency in basic skills in an alternative learning environment.
Through independent study, students and parents become active participants in the learning process while under the general supervision of the certificated teacher representative.
Our Goal:
To provide an alternative academic learning experience of the highest quality possible for the student who is capable of learning through an independent study program.
Our Objective:
To develop the highest degree of academic performance, self-confidence, self-reliance, responsibility, and potential within each student.
